Tampa Housing Authority President & CEO Jerome D. Ryans Named Grand Marshal of the 2026 Tampa MLK Parade

Jan. 12, 2026 - TAMPA, FL - The Tampa Housing Authority (THA) proudly announces that Jerome D. Ryans, President and Chief Executive Officer, has been selected as Grand Marshal of the 2026 Tampa Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, one of the City of Tampa's most significant annual commemorations honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The designation recognizes Ryans' distinguished leadership in advancing equitable access to housing, economic opportunity, and community empowerment-principles that are central to Dr. King's vision of justice and dignity for all.

"Dr. King reminded us that 'life's most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?'," said Ryans. "Serving as Grand Marshal of the 2026 Tampa MLK Parade is a profound honor, and one I accept on behalf of the residents, staff, and partners of the Tampa Housing Authority who work every day to uplift families, strengthen neighborhoods, and expand opportunity. Upholding Dr. King's legacy requires action, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to justice in our community."

Under Ryans' leadership, the Tampa Housing Authority has led some of the most transformative mixed-use, mixed-income community redevelopments in the region. Signature developments such as Encore! at Tampa, West River, and the ongoing redevelopment of Robles Park Village have replaced distressed public housing with vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods. Each redevelopment has resulted in a threefold or greater increase in affordable housing options within those communities, while also attracting private investment, retail, and economic opportunity that benefit the broader city.

Ryans' leadership has garnered national recognition. He was named the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) 2025 Outstanding Professional of the Year, the organization's highest honor. The award recognizes exemplary leadership, innovation, and impact in the housing and community development field and underscores Ryans' influence and credibility as a housing leader on the national stage.

The Tampa Housing Authority participates in the Tampa MLK Parade every year as a visible demonstration of its commitment to honoring Dr. King's legacy and standing in solidarity with the community it serves. This year's parade carries special significance. As Grand Marshal, Ryans' participation has energized THA staff and residents, inspiring the agency to present an exceptional and meaningful float that reflects pride, unity, and the mission to cultivate affordable housing while empowering people and transforming communities.

Honoring Dr. King's legacy holds particular importance for the Tampa Housing Authority. The majority of THA residents are Black families and individuals whose histories, resilience, and futures remain deeply connected to the ongoing pursuit of civil rights, economic equity, and fair housing.

"Dr. King's work speaks directly to the lived experiences of our residents," Ryans added. "Ensuring access to safe, stable, and affordable housing is our moral duty and one of the most tangible ways we can advance the dream of a more just and inclusive society, Ryans concluded."

The 2026 Tampa MLK Parade will bring together community leaders, residents, civic organizations, and families from across the region to celebrate unity, service, and progress. The Tampa Housing Authority looks forward to joining the community in honoring Dr. King's enduring legacy and reaffirming its commitment to equity for generations to come.
